Kensington Metropark — Beach, Farm Center & Nature Trails

There's a particular kind of tired that comes at the end of a school year — or a long stretch of parenting — when what you need isn't a vacation. It's a day. One good day, close to home, that doesn't cost much and doesn't require a suitcase.

Kensington Metropark, just west of Detroit in Milford, is exactly that kind of day.

Why it works for families

Kensington has a little bit of everything, which matters when you've got kids of different ages and different attention spans. There's a swimming beach on Kent Lake for the water-lovers. There's a Farm Center with cows, sheep, and a red barn full of animals for the little ones who just want to pet something. And there are miles of paved and wooded trails for the kid who needs to run until they're tired.

You could spend the whole day at one spot, or you could hit all three. Either way, nobody's bored, and nobody's rushed.

What it costs

A Metroparks day pass runs about $10–$15 per vehicle, and that's it. Pack a lunch, bring your own bikes if you've got them, and you've got a full family day for less than the cost of two movie tickets.

Keeping it safe

The beach has lifeguards in season, but life jackets for younger swimmers are still a smart call. Trails are well-marked and mostly flat, which makes them easy to navigate with a stroller or a wagon. Bring sunscreen, water, and a hat — the open beach area has less shade than you'd expect.

A teacher's take

I spent 35 years around classrooms, and if there's one thing I know, it's that kids learn best when they don't know they're learning. A day at the Farm Center teaches more about where food comes from than any worksheet could. A walk in the woods teaches patience, curiosity, and noticing — skills that matter far beyond childhood.

Sometimes the best lesson plan is just to get outside and let the day unfold.
