Mental Wellness Check-Ins You Can Build Into Your School Day
Academic success and mental wellness are not separate goals — they are the same goal. A child who feels emotionally safe, seen, and supported learns better, retains more, and shows up more fully every day. This is not soft science. This is what the research has confirmed, and what every experienced educator already knows.
Here are three simple wellness practices you can start today:
1. Open every school day with a feelings check-in. It doesn't have to be long or complicated. Just ask: On a scale of one to ten, how are you feeling today? Then listen without fixing. That moment of being heard can shift the entire tone of a child's day.
2. Build movement into your schedule — every single day. Physical activity isn't a reward for finishing schoolwork. It's a requirement for the brain to function well. A 10-minute walk, a stretch break, or free outdoor play mid-morning can reset focus and regulate emotion more effectively than any supplement.
3. End the day with gratitude. Before school is done, ask each child to name one thing they learned and one thing they are grateful for. This simple habit trains the brain to look for the positive, which builds emotional resilience over time.
